Cele 6 cifre au semnificata urmatoare:
- Prima cifra semnifica cele zece regiuni postale in care este impartita Romania si este alcatuita dintre cifre cuprinse intre 0 si 9
- A doua cifra semnifica judetele componente ale unei regiuni din tara.
- Ultimele patru cifre semnifica dpdv. postal , orase, resedinte, sate, strazi sau imobile.
In Romania codurile postale sunt reprezentate de o serie de 6 cifre, acestea au rolul de a identifica mai bine o adresa postala.
La inceputul anilor 1960, Germania devine prima tara care introduce codurile postale. Fiind urmata de marea majoritatea tarilor cu exceptia unora care nu au deloc acest sistem sau il folosesc in mod limitat. In Romania debutul codurilor postale a avut loc in 1974, fiind format dintr-o serie de 4 cifre. In anul 2003 s-a dorit extinderea codurilor pana la nivel de strada.
